Real Madrid striker Cristiano Ronaldo is named FIFA 2017 World Player of the Year for the second time in a row

Real Madrid striker Cristiano Ronaldo won the 2017 World Player of the Year for the second time in a row on Monday after winning the Primera Liga and Champions League earlier this year.

The Portuguese international won the "best" award last year after winning the European Championship Euro 2016 and the Champions League, while he is also a candidate for the Golden Ball award for the fifth time in his history.

Cristiano Ronaldo has won the World Player of the Year award despite fierce competition with Barcelona's Lionel Messi and Neymar da Silva of Paris St Germain.

The selection of the "best" winner in 2017 involved many football leaders and coaches, as well as FIFA-accredited journalists, to select only one of three players nominated for the award.

The preliminary list of 24 players is reduced to a final list of only three players after a vote between four equal players, national team leaders, journalists and the public from around the world.

Ronaldo, who also won the Golden Ball award in 2008, 2013, 2014 and 2016, said the FIFA World Player of the Year award was a great honor for him and that it would not have been possible without the support of all his colleagues.

The Golden Ball award decided in 2015 to disengage from the FIFA World Cup, while France Football magazine relies on some journalists to choose the winner rather than the leaders and coaches of the teams.
